ENGLAND CAPTAIN WAYNE ROONEY 'DROPPED FOR WORLD CUP QUALIFIER AGAINST SLOVENIA'

England interim manager Gareth Southgate has reportedly decided to drop captain Wayne Rooney from the starting XI for tomorrow evening's World Cup qualifier against Slovenia.

The 30-year-old, who is England's all-time leading goalscorer, played the full 90 minutes of the Three Lions' 2-0 win over Malta in a midfield role.

During the match, Rooney, who has failed to start his last three games for Manchester United, was booed by sections of the crowd at Wembley.

Southgate defended his captain after the match, but according to talkSPORT, Rooney will drop to the bench for tomorrow's game.

The report adds that Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Eric Dier will be selected as his replacement, while Gary Cahill and Jordan Henderson are vying for the captain's armband.
